They&#8217;re weaving together a trust fabric to allow shared services via robust federated authentication and attribute-based authorization (see: <a title=\"InCommon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.incommon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">InCommon<\/a>, <a title=\"UK Access Federation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/federation\/\" target=\"_blank\">UK Access Federation<\/a>, <a title=\"GakuNin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gakunin.jp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">GakuNin<\/a>, <a title=\"EduGAIN\" href=\"http:\/\/www.geant.net\/service\/edugain\/pages\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">EduGAIN<\/a>, <a title=\"REFEDS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.terena.org\/activities\/refeds\/\" target=\"_blank\">REFEDS<\/a>, many others).<\/p>\n<p>At any scale, it&#8217;s hard to extend trust from &#8220;my tribe&#8221; to &#8220;your tribe&#8221;- but once we&#8217;ve done it, the return on the trust is almost magical. With federation in higher education, suddenly services and projects a school would be hard pressed to support on its own become easy to leverage.<\/p>\n<p>So how does this scale beyond higher education? Trust is the basis for lowering barriers to collaboration and lubricating the machinery for an effective economy (See Paul Zak&#8217;s fascinating <a title=\"TED talk on Oxytosin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/paul_zak_trust_morality_and_oxytocin.html\" target=\"_blank\">TED talk on Oxytosin<\/a>). I think this suggests that higher education is once again leading the way in building a framework for increased global trust, global research collaboration and global wealth production.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The global higher education IT community is doing something pretty amazing.
